Hi, I’m Kate!
I’m the lawyer behind McChesney Law, a fertility and surrogacy law practice based in Ontario, supporting intended parents, surrogates, and donors across Canada.
My path to fertility law is both professional and deeply personal.
Before welcoming my son through gestational surrogacy, I spent years navigating infertility. That experience gave me a firsthand understanding of how emotional, overwhelming, expensive, and time-sensitive fertility and family-building journeys can be. It also showed me the power of community and the importance of having knowledgeable professionals who can make an already complex process feel a little easier to navigate.
After a decade working in litigation, I made the decision to focus my legal practice exclusively on fertility and surrogacy law. Today, I help clients navigate surrogacy and donor agreements with clarity, compassion, and respect for everyone involved.
Because I have been through this process myself, I understand that the legal work is only one part of a much bigger journey. Behind every agreement are real people, relationships, hopes, vulnerabilities, and often years of experiences that have brought them to this point. My approach is practical, responsive, and collaborative, with a focus on making sure clients understand what is happening, what comes next, and what they need to feel confident moving forward.
Advocacy is also an important part of who I am and the work I do. For years, I have volunteered with Fertility Matters Canada and currently serve on its Board of Directors. Being part of this organization has allowed me to contribute to broader conversations about fertility care in Canada, advocate for greater awareness and access, and support a community that played such an important role in my own journey.
My personal experience with infertility opened my eyes to the significant emotional and financial barriers many people face when trying to access fertility care, as well as the inequities in treatment, funding, workplace benefits, and support that can depend on where someone lives or who they work for. I am passionate about helping move those conversations forward and advocating for a fertility landscape that is more accessible, informed, and supportive for everyone trying to build their family.
